Mount Lao

Mount Lao

About 30 km (19 miles) northeast of downtown Qingdao is Mount Lao, or Laoshan, where it is the highest coastal mountain in China and third highest mountain in Shandong, with the highest peak reaching almost 1,133 meters (3716 feet). The mountain is culturally significant for being the birthplace of Taoism, a Chinese philosophy based on the writings of Lao-tzu (6th Century BC philosopher) to advocate humility and religious piety. Also located on Mount Lao on the southern slope is the Taiqing Temple, which holds over 2000 years of history. It is a sacred Taoist palace and the largest institution of the Quanzhen school of Taoism. It is also said to have housed 1000 Taoist priests in its peak years. The
