Nanshan (Southern Mountain) Buddha
After going public, the Nanshan Group started building housing communities and taking care of the farmers’ retirees at no cost. The tall Buddha was built as part of a restoration of historical Buddhist and Taoist temples nearby. The Taoist temple close-by had 25 pavilions and 198 statues. It did not take long for villagers to turn an entire region (called Long Kou) into a world-class tourist destination. Same group of farmers are the founding members of Qingdao Airline.
At 38.66 meters high and 660 tons in weight, this is the largest Buddha statue in northern China. You need to climb 400 steps uphill to see the Buddha, as well 9,999 small Buddhas statues in the worship hall. Ten thousand is a figure to suggest immortality in the Chinese culture.
