Swan Lake in Weihai
Few years ago, a local ordinance gave up the tradition of Chinese New Year crackers to keep the swans’ peaceful life. Rongcheng has China’s best swan photographer, Mr. Ma Shi Min. He is a legend for swan photography. He shares loving stories of swan life. As more tourists feed swans to take photos, more swans are domesticated to lose life to their ability to fly far and high. To prevent this, travelers are advised not to feed the swans while taking photos.
Weihai’s swan is such a local pride that every few years a national photography event is held just for it. As more swans are being “protected” by local residents, Rongcheng’s annual swan population is slowly becoming the largest habitat of such species in Asia. The challenge is how to de-domesticate these wild swans.
The best time to visit the Swan Lake is at sunset on a clear day. Check in with Mr. Ma Shi Min, China’s photo legend of swans, to share with you his story. Or even better, show you the best places in town to take pictures of the swans. That is, if he is in town. Maybe your tour guide can give you tips where to find him.
