Weifang
“ The Kite Capital of the World“
Weifang sits geographically at the center of Shandong. It is the 2nd largest metropolitan city region in Shandong with 10% of Shandong’s population and covers about 10% of Shandong’s land. Weifang’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) ranks 4th in Shandong and 32nd in China. Weifang faces the Bohai Sea to the north. Its southern tip borders with Qingdao and Rizhao.

An hour’s drive from Weifang’s southern tip, you will be able to reach Wang Ping Kou port, Rizhao City’s beach front. Weifang is also the mid-point mark between Qingdao City and Jinan, the capital of Shandong. How much more central can Weifang be?
Weifang has an astounding history. Rewind time back to 7000 years ago during the Neolithic Age, traces of clan tribes inhabitance has been found in what is known today as Weifang. Documented history dates back to the Xia Dynasty (2070 B.C). During the Spring and Autumn Period (770 B.C. to 221 B.C.), Weifang had become part of the Qi and Lu Kingdoms (the predated Shandong Province). Weifang’s current population is 935 million (2019). It was voted #6 in Best of Living Regions in China in 2018.
Weifang is a gateway to dive deeper into the center of China’s cultural heritage. While China today has 23 provinces and 11 administrative regions, the Chinese people still call China the “Land of Nine States” (jiuzhoudadi). Back in 221 B.C, Emperor Qin had unified China and divided the country into nine regions. His ambition was to orchestrate a national system of irrigation and transportation. One of the nine states is called Qingzhou, which is an hour from today’s Weifang City. Qingzhou’s administrative jurisdiction extends well beyond Jinan, the provincial capital. Qingzhou covers today’s Linqu County, where the Qi State originated.
What we want to see in Weifang is the lifestyle of locals following their family traditions. Such traditions such as kites that continue to be built the same method and technique as their ancestors did; wedding rituals are faithfully executed; Chinese New Year’s 15 day festivity is accurately conducted by the hour. It is fun to uncover the intricacies of Shandong’s folklore at the center of its origin, Weifang City.
Weifang is a metropolitan of contract. Peek deep into Linqu (birthplace of Qi State 1044B.C.-221B.C.) or Qingzhou’s old town living quarters, you will find exotic 1000-year old stone tablets with inscriptions documenting events of the era all over the place. While not too far is Weifang’s wheel-less ferris wheel (144 meter high and 125 meter in diameter) teases the London Eye in scale (135 meter high and 120 meter in diameter). You will be able to taste “cultural heritage” certified cakes from the Mi San Dao Pastry Shop as long as you make to it before opening as they sell out fast. On the same street, you cannot escape a farm child’s happy face enjoying a localized version of “Big Mac” at Weifang’s hamburger chain store.
Weifang is a real cultural draw.
