The first smoke tower was built in 1368 to warn the locals of pirates from Japan. The area was developed to include consulates, churches and residence for foreigners from UK, USA, Denmark, Japan, France, Germany, etc. Altogether 17 countries, including the U.K., France, Germany, the U.S. and Italy had established consulates here since Yantai became a treaty port in 1861. The cluster of consulate building is considered the oldest, biggest and best preserved in Asia. You will see mixed architecture styles along the 390-meter-long street paved in 1861.
